Paul Edwards at Lancashire 291-9 v Middlesex
A lead of over 100 runs seemed an Olympian objective when Lancashire's cricketers resumed their first innings this morning but somehow they have managed it. A ninth-wicket stand of 87 between Ryan McLaren and Tom Bailey has made the major contribution to the home side's prosperity but the length of the Middlesex seamers has also been awry since Tim Murtagh took the vital wickets of Chanderpaul and Vilas in the first four overs of the day. The cricket has been a lovely reward for home spectators' fortitude in less than summery conditions. McLaren has just been bowled by Murtagh for 75 but Bailey is unbeaten on 40. This will be a mighty test for Middlesex's batsmen for it is a deficit they cannot have expected.
