Tim Wigmore at Middlesex 126-0 v Essex
Essex look desperately bereft of ideas and Middlesex, after a stuttering start at the Ageas Bowl last week, are providing a reminder of why they’re champions. There has been much focus on Nick Gubbins after his 1400 run season in 2016, yet Sam Robson retains ambitions to add to the seven Test caps he won in the summer of 2014, and is comfortably outscoring his opening partner here. Three delightful shots in Aaron Beard’s last over - a straight drive slightly to the bowler’s left, a dreamy flick to midwicket and a straight drive slightly to the bowler’s right - have taken Robson to 76, to go with the 84 he scored at Hampshire in Middlesex’s opening Championship game. Alastair Cook, watching on from slip, will be an interested observer.
