George Dobell at Warwickshire (215-2) v Surrey
Warwickshire have their first batting bonus point of the season. Ian Westwood’s hundred – off 130 balls; I’d be surprised if he has made quicker – has provided the bulk of the runs. It seems the edge to slip on 46 did not carry – it bounced in front of Burns – but he may have given a chance down the leg side off Dernbach on 104. Foakes dropped what would have been a simple chance, so it’s hard to know if there was any bat on it at this stage. At the other end is Ian Bell. These two played for Warwickshire U10s together a quarter-of-a-century ago. Bell has produced a couple of those guides to third man that we saw so much off during the 2013 Ashes, while Westwood has just upper cut Dernbach for six over that short third-man boundary.

Tim Wigmore at Middlesex 186-0 v Essex
Sam Robson began 2016 with 231 and 106 at Lord’s. He’s now marked his first appearance at 2017 with another century, secured through an edge through the slips off Ravi Bopara - perhaps his ropiest shot of an otherwise chanceless innings; Robson has raced along, scoring 19 boundaries. As if piqued by being overshadowed, Nick Gubbins has lifted Simon Harmer over long on for six. This could be brutal for Essex - we’re still only halfway through the day.
