Alan Gardner at Essex v Lancashire 131-3
Well, well... Haseeb Hameed has misjudged one. Jamie Porter has his second wicket, this time from the Hayes Close End, to keep Lancashire in check after they had lunched on 114 for 2. Now the Eternal Warrior, Shiv Chanderpaul, has crabbed his way to the crease, with the sun shining, conditions clear and the pitch demanding a long stay (from someone).
The merits of picking Adam Wheater (the better batsman) above James Foster (the better, well, you know) have already come up for discussion, meanwhile. In the over before Hameed's demise, Simon Harmer lured Steven Croft out of his crease, only for the ball to whizz away down the leg side for four byes. The ball certainly bounced and went quickly to Wheater's left - and he may also have been unsighted - but you don't have to go far here to find someone who'll tell you that Fozzy would have snaffled it. Four down would have been interesting, and looks like it's turning a bit for Harmer, too.
Otherwise, Chelmsford is bedecked for the new season, jostling with happy punters and poised for the visit of Ebony and Dan on the #countycricketlive Road Trip. But they might be lucky to find a parking space.
