I suspect I'm the closest to Lord's here, so weather report: still raining quite heavily, but has ceded somewhat and the clouds are a touch lighter.

@nickcricket It's a shame Gidman didn't join a few years earlier. We'd have had the fearsome raw pace trio of Stevens, Gidman and Mark Davies.

Speaking of the Gidman Gap. Does anyone know why he's been playing in Kent's 2nd XI all season?
by Kieran Layer9/8/2017 10:55:10 AM
@StaggerBreaths - I'd say it's more 'The problem with Whitaker & Fraser' than Trevor, they're the ones who go and check these players out and put the names forward

I'm with you there Andrew. Thus we find ourselves back considering the problems with Trevor...

IF they are going to carry on the merry go round (please NO), then surely Burns is the next on the opener production line
by dez dezzy9/8/2017 10:50:51 AM
StaggersBreaths - you're right, to be honest I don't actually think Mitchell is international class. I just find it quite striking that the selectors keep picking players who haven't really proved themselves as exceptional in first class cricket (while taking your points about Durham openers)

I'm afraid, Andrew, my mind is drawn irresistibly to the last time Worcs. were in the first division. Mitchell was absolutely tripe. Granted, this was a good match against a good side, but until he shows he can overcome the Gidman Gap (by which point I'm afraid he'll be too old) he's not one for the national side to my mind.
Also you're comparing him to two openers who've plied most/all of their trades at Chester-Love-Seam, a player I wouldn't have put in the squad anyway (Malan), and... well.
