Tim Wigmore at Essex 70-4 v Somerset
Its been a jittery morning for Essex with their seven Championship title, and first since 1992, in sight. Opting to bat first on a glorious day, Essex would certainly not have envisaged losing four wickets before lunch - a testament not just to the skill of Somerset’s seamers, who have all moved the ball and maintained an excellent length, but to some injudicious strokeplay. Three batsmen - Chopra, Bopara and Wheater - have fallen lbw playing across the line, promoting inevitable grumbling about Essex still being in T20 mode. The debris of 39-4 was the sort of position calling on all Ryan ten Doeschate’s pugnacity, and he has responded with a series of rasping cuts to support Nick Browne. But Browne should have been dismissed on 24: he started walking off after flicking Groenewald to square leg, where Edward Byron shelled a regulation catch. Lurking in the relegation zone, Somerset have some jitters of their own.
