Jon Culley at Notts v Kent 101-5
The catering staff are clearly struggling to get their heads round the idea of ‘lunch’ at four o’clock, as is evidenced in the dining room here, where the traditional tea-time scones are perched on the edge of the hot plate, jostling for space with the fish and chips, pork cutlets and pie left over from lunch. They decided to open for lunch at 12 noon and seem to have done most of their business before play began. The question now is what happens at the official tea, which is at 6.40pm. Will there be any scones left? Will anyone be still here to serve them? Not sure they’ve thought it through. Quite a few in the crowd thought Kent hadn’t thought things through when they chose to bat first, especially when they were six for three. They have recovered to a degree in a session that has been entertaining if nothing else, yet the two batsmen best equipped to turn things round have gone. Sam Billings, making a brief appearance between England T20 and England Lions assignments, rattled off a quick 30 in typical style but then aimed a very loose drive at Luke Fletcher and lost his leg stump. Darren Stevens, also keen to push things along, took a similar liberty with Fletch and was caught behind. Pattinson has come back for a second spell and had Will Gidman dropped on two against his former county.
