David Hopps at Somerset 25-2 lead Essex by 105 runs
Tom Abell has had an undistinguished first match as Somerset captain with scores of 1 and 0 logged against his name.
Abell seemed likely to avoid a duck when he survived a very strong lbw appeal by Jamie Porter, but two balls later he nicked a ball of decent line and was caught at the wicket.
Marcus Trescothick has also departed - he got a dubious lbw decision, another wicket for Porter but one where replays suggested the ball pitched outside leg stump.
Fortunately, no lesser authority than Vic Marks is in the media box and remains insistent, as I do, that this is a decent cricket wicket on which both batting sides have under-performed.
For all that, the game is rushing on apace.
