Tim Wigmore at Middlesex 277-2 v Essex
Good morning from Lord’s. We had a delayed start by 20 minutes, which was a little perplexing - it really wasn’t that dark. Anyway the sun has come out, and Neil Wagner begun in a ferocious mood - in the first over, he elicited an edge from Steve Eskinazi through the slips and conceded four byes. Jamie Porter has also found the edge of Sam Robson’s bat, which went through the vacant second slip for four. Middlesex are already in a position from which defeat is virtually impossible so will look to declare sometime after tea, you’d think. Now, though Robson is out, slashing Porter behind for 149.

George Dobell at Warwickshire (313 for 9) v Surrey.
Could England take Footitt to the Ashes? At his best, he would definitely be an asset. And, in a line-up with several all-rounders (Stokes, Woakes, Moeen, Bairstow etc) maybe you could think of him as a luxury bowler who wouldn’t need to be exposed on those days when he can’t find his rhythm. It would be a hell of a risk to include him in a four man seam attack and pretty much impossible in a three-man one. I’m not sure who is going to take the wickets for England this winter, though, and Footitt, at his best, has some really good weapons. Chris Wright is the most recent departure here, bowled by a beauty from Sam Curran who has been the pick of the bowlers.
