is there any argument for not taking Leach at this point? he seems to have got over his problems with his action, and is clearly statistically the best spinner in county cricket by *ahem* absolutely miles
by Rob Little9/14/2017 1:01:17 PM
I'm mystified by the Eng approach to spin. Moeen - yes, fine. But it seems all very half-hearted with regard to pretty much everyone else that doesn't yield instant success. Crane - who knows? Rashid seemed to me well worth persevering with for red as well as white ball. But you need a reserve (or a second) finger spinner. Who? I fear it'll be Dawson. :-/

And maybe a few spin bowling camps in Bangladesh with Qadri/Bess/Parkinsons. They do like a whole bunch of winter squads...

by Dave Knibb9/14/2017 12:56:43 PM
They may do some sort of "fast bowler camp" like they've done before with Garton/Joverton/a few others but hopefully not as they always, always give someone a stress fracture of the back
by NemoUKS9/14/2017 12:56:34 PM
That is why England can call upon statistically the second best current Leg spinner from Shoreham-by-Sea

TCurran for the EPP that is, not the main team
by NemoUKS9/14/2017 12:55:48 PM
Although how can Crane, Foakes or Curran get in as they are uncapped, and as Bayliss said...
by Dave Knibb9/14/2017 12:55:14 PM
Rashid can barely make the Yorks first XI at the moment
by Joe Williams9/14/2017 12:54:42 PM
@Dave .... hope I didn't put my foot in it.
by Jamie Dow9/14/2017 12:54:23 PM
I'd be surprised if Rashid is in the squad based on the noises Bayliss has made about him. TCurran is a fair call though.
by NemoUKS9/14/2017 12:54:14 PM
Think Rashid's probably dead in the water in Tests sadly.
by StaggerBreaths9/14/2017 12:54:03 PM
@NemoUKS I would expect Tom Curran to be in the squad since he's making the ODI squads now, over Coad or Garton
by carsayer9/14/2017 12:53:42 PM
Is Ballance a shoe in for the test squad? I know he wasn't technically dropped but may be seen as one failure too far, also not really scored any runs since early season now
by Joe Williams9/14/2017 12:53:19 PM
@Nemo Outside the last XI, I think the other 5 will be Hameed, Hales, Foakes, Rashid and Woakes.
by Dave Knibb9/14/2017 12:53:14 PM
Pretty glacial from Hameed. But I do think that, since the Aussies' main strategy at home is to wang it down as fast as possible, it's a pretty good counter-strategy just to defend and let them knacker themselves out (and get injured, as the most dangerous of them seem liable to). I'm ok with this from Hameed, even if it may not be electrifying stuff for the punters in the stands!
by Jamie Dow9/14/2017 12:53:10 PM
Crane is the main squad! The hype train has left the station. How many First Class Wickets does Moeen Ali or Rashid have in Australia? Not as many as Mason

by ESPNcricinfo Live9/14/2017 12:52:25 PM
Bayliss did say they would take a few openers so that is where the batting reserve is likely to come from, if you think that the Keeper is a middle order reserve batsmen
In the case of Northeast (and this isn't a 'chip' comment Lawrence), I think his only chance is by scoring Div.1 runs.
by Dave Knibb9/14/2017 12:49:18 PM
I've been talking up Northeast for a while now, but as Joe says, no new players for the Tour. But must be a shoe in for the EPP.
by Dave Knibb9/14/2017 12:47:12 PM
That is what Bayliss suggested, probably better for SNE that he can come in during the post Ashes rubble anyway
by nickcricket9/14/2017 12:46:55 PM
As far as I can tell, no one is getting on that plane without having been in the squad before, so no, SNE prob not going to be on that plane,
by Joe Williams9/14/2017 12:45:05 PM
Star Comment from Nick there, if there's any justice.

Northeast called Strauss a 'doos' at some point. It's the only explanation I can think of.
by StaggerBreaths9/14/2017 12:44:08 PM
@NemoUKS No, should change his name to Sam Southeast, then he will get three Tests a summer no matter what and have hundreds of million in the bank while others in the lineup drown in debt
by nickcricket9/14/2017 12:43:57 PM
In many ways, the EPP squad should be a lot more interesting than the Ashes one.
by NemoUKS9/14/2017 12:42:54 PM
To rephrase Dave's question, is there a number of runs that Northeast could score to get himself on the plane?
by NemoUKS9/14/2017 12:42:16 PM
I mean its not like Australia will have anyone who bowls a bouncer like Peter Trego...
