On the Stokes front, which one of us, in our 20s, hasn't been out drinking and got into some sort of idiotic fisticuffs? I know I certainly have and I can't help but think it's a bit hypocritical to admonish him for it. Esp as the start of the video shows some serious provocation. The Harvey stuff is unforgivable tho.

The video of the assault does appear to show one of the men trying to hit someone with a bottle before Stokes attacks them, I don't find that too hard to deal with frankly. The video of him taking the piss of Harvey Price is just stupid.
by Samora RL9/28/2017 2:58:54 PM
Never liked Ponting, but admired how he changed his life and career round. Hope Stokes can do the same.

Obviously there's no condoning what Stokes did, but sport is an entertainment business. The most loved sports stars often had off-field issues (Best/Freddie/Gazza) and that seems to make them even more endeared. Yes it's hardly ideal for parents, however it's these sort of characters who often make sport a lot more interesting
by Andrei Rhodes9/28/2017 2:56:17 PM
If there is one thing to come out of this, I hope it can have a transformative effect on Stokes that the Root punching thing had on Warner. He, like Warner, is a father and would do well to reassess his life and career as a result
by GeorgePotter199/28/2017 2:56:14 PM

Dave, kids idolising footballers deal with the same ever day. I'd tell him it's very far from okay. Sports stars do get into these sorts of scrapes, especially ones who punch lockers in their spare time. I don't think most of them are great idols.
by StaggerBreaths9/28/2017 2:52:04 PM
Notts are going about this all wrong, just stick Chris Read on to send some loopy wide ones down until stumps
by Will Colwell9/28/2017 2:50:57 PM
@Dave - well said, although my kids have never heard of him. It's all SO Ben Stokes.

I would happily boycott the Express, Sun and Mail.................if I read any of them to start with
by Joe Williams9/28/2017 2:48:53 PM
All I know is, I have a 9 year old son. He's seen the video online, and before anyone says any different, it's not a porn site, this footage is freely available. Do I tell him that's it's okay to idolise Ben Stokes, because he does, do I tell him that he was pursuing and punching people in self defence? People get in fights every night of the week, but England stars, role models, don't do that every night of the week. What do I tell him? He might get off with it? Brilliant message to send out, thanks Ben Stokes, you've really done a favour mate...not.
by Dave Knibb9/28/2017 2:48:44 PM
The Express are awful and I respect boycotting them, and yes the timing is absolutely laughable.
Stokes behaving like that is just inexcusable though

@DaveKnibb He could argue that by the most popular newspaper in the country releasing it it has prejudiced his defense in that it would be hard to find a jury who hadn't seen it. Not sure if that would stick tho
