Paul Edwards at Lancashire 290 v Essex 9-1
It is some reflection of the toughness Lancashire have shown this season that their last three wickets doubled their first-innings score. All the same the bonus points score reads: Lancashire 2 Essex 3 and that will suit the leaders fine. All Varun Chopra's team need to do is hold their shovels level in the few weeks of the season and they appear well capable of doing that. Chopra and the estimable Browne have opened competently although it is odd that Jarvis has not taken the new ball.
Meanwhile, I doff my cap to Chris Read. The retirement of cricketers like Read and Yorkshire's Ryan Sidebottom is one of the most poignant aspects of this month. I can take September; indeed I have taken many of them. But the idea that I'll never again see Siddy rumbling in for Yorkshire or Read playing a vital innings for Notts has me filling up.
Back to the cricket and Browne has just lost his off pole playing no shot to McLaren. Essex 9-1.
