I know we've had this conversation before, and Bairstow has definitely gone up in my estimation as a white ball player since the SA games, but i know which of Roy & Bairstow WI would probably rather bowl at in the shorter formats...
by dez dezzy9/12/2017 4:28:49 PM
@SDHoneymonster There is certainly an arguement that Root will struggle on any surface where he needs to generate the pace, like we saw against India but he stood up really well in the iT20 World Cup
by nickcricket9/12/2017 4:28:38 PM
Which is not me saying Root is a bad T20 player before anyone questions my sanity.
by SDHoneymonster9/12/2017 4:26:27 PM
Bairstow is technically the incumbent, but do England really see him opening at the WC in two years time. I would be surprised, that is why I thought they would rest Root or Stokes and use that as a way of getting Roy back without dropping Bairstow. Then Its likely lots of people will miss the ODIs after the Ashes so England unlikely to need to name their full strengh team for a while
by nickcricket9/12/2017 4:26:15 PM
@nickcricket It's not even just to rest him - I'd just prefer someone at three who can hit sixes a bit more regularly in T20, especially against seam. Root can slog sweep and hit the spinners straight but rarely does he spank a seamer into the crowd.

When Stokes returns for the ODI they will need to choose between Roy and Bairstow
by nickcricket9/12/2017 4:21:46 PM
It would be easier for England to rest Root from the T20 and the ODIs to ease selection problems, but they are only resting one player in this game its Ben Stokes so his slot is open and Bairstow scored Bairstow scored 60* and 47 in his two innings Vs SA so Malan misses out

After his performance v SA on debut it'd be tough to leave out Malan, probably for Root, who I don't think should be playing T20 (although having named him it'd be weird not to play him)

Who do you think will play in the one off T20? Something like Hales, Roy, Root, Morgan, Bairstow, Buttler, Dawson, Rashid, Jordan, Plunkett, Curran with Ball, Willey and Malan. Maybe Ball or Willey for Dawson?
