o Derbyshire come into this game having tasted defeat only once in their last 10 visits to Hove; they did suffer that loss in their most recent match there however (W7 D2).
o Sussex’s six-game unbeaten streak came to an end in their last match (v Northamptonshire); they won five of their six matches in that time (D1).

@WillColwell A full FC season in the Shield is only 10 games, 11 if you make the final. Used to be a strength when the Shield was strong but nowadays they're not producing the same quality of talent it holds young players back IMO.

Always find it interesting how few FC matches Australians tend to play. Mitchell Johnson played 117 in his career, compared to - for instance - Alex Lees' 82 or Sam Robson's 125

Yorkshire attack really gets exposed on flatter pitches, all of them bar Patto need the surface to be doing a bit and Patto isn't as effective when the batsmen are under no pressure at the other end. Not an easy fix

Paul Edwards at Somerset 73-2 v Lancashire

Stephen Parry was bowling after a little more than an hour's play here but Lancashire had already picked up a couple of leg befores by then, Bailey and Jarvis claiming the scalps of Trescothick and Bartlett. Both teams have selected a couple of spinners for this game but Lancashire opted to bowl. Two wickets in the first session will hardly justify that decision. If I tell you about Eddie Byrom and James Hildreth's batting, I'll be accused of mockers or some such folklore. So I won't.

He had looked so good. Ian Bell had timed a few beautifully, not least a pair of cover drives, but Neil Wagner had produced a lovely inswinger to account for him. Bell, like Trott and Hain, may reflect that his head fell to the off side. Lovely ball, though.
