Tim Wigmore at Somerset 122-5 v Surrey
A stunning spell after lunch from Rikki Clarke, jagging the ball both ways at an awkward length, has ripped open this match. First, George Bartlett edged a lifter to Kumar Sangakkara at first slip. In Clarke’s following over, James Hildreth played around a ball that seamed in, and was trapped on his crease. Tom Abell then edged his very first ball to Sangakkara at slip - at least, it looked like he had, but Abell lingered and the umpires reckoned the ball had bounced en route. No matter: three balls later, Clarke angled a delivery in to uproot Abell’s offstump for his third wicket in nine balls. That became four in 27 when Edward Bryan slashed Clarke to gully. Somerset have a lot of work to do to avoid squandering Marcus Trescothick’s 65 in the morning. There’s no one better to do it than Steven Davies, who has belatedly found his best form in recent weeks and is playing his first Championship game back at The Oval since leaving last year.
