regarding Ashes chances, Ed Barnard is not failing ;)
by Duluth K. Archaeopteryx9/26/2017 3:33:33 PM
It's properly typical James Hildreth to wait until he's almost certainly too late to make an England squad then produce an absolutely vital end of season knock, by the way. Remember last year when he made 130 on a broken foot right when the India squad was announced
by Will Colwell9/26/2017 3:33:11 PM
may be a bit harsh to judge one's potential ability in an England shirt down in Aus based on performances on v bowler friendly wickets in the arse end of September, but my god, virtually every name linked with a potential ashes spot is having a mare!!!

Cricinfo mention Denly as an outside Ashes option and...
by StaggerBreaths9/26/2017 3:30:15 PM
BTW : I wouldn't judge him on that performance. It was just amusing.
by Haystack_Jnr9/26/2017 3:30:11 PM
@MattRichardson it is because the competition for places is so so poor, there is no one outside of Root and Cook who has done anything worthy of being nailed on in that top 5.
by Joe Williams9/26/2017 3:29:29 PM
@Haystack_Jnr I remember it, he got runs in another match. He was using it as BBL warmup
by nickcricket9/26/2017 3:29:24 PM
@Matt - if all that is true, it sends a terrible message to other aspiring players. Imagine what players like Northeast, Patel, or even Hildreth would be thinking ?

@Matt Richardson. I agree on Hales, he wasn't terrible as an opener, just not the role for him. Would have him in as an option for 3/4/5. Not many obvious alternatives who are nailing those places down
by rodldavies9/26/2017 3:28:53 PM
However, the talk of Vince being anywhere near the Ashes squad is laughable. Really starting to wonder what dirt he has on Bayliss.

Ah... may void my argument of him being a proven international cricketer whereas Jennings etc are used to the very different weaponry of Stevens et al

Can't remember the details, was some kind of T20 game against a Uni side I think. They basically bounced him out. Wasn't very pretty.

Rashid's averaging 50 in the champo this year. Ball maybe so, but I couldn't find enough truly mediocre pacers being talked up and I think he'll be fairly tripe without any swing. At least Jimmy can bowl dry.

I do fear for our top order if Starc and ***mins get stuck in. I'd be playing Hales personally - may not have quite worked out at test level but he won't soil himself facing 90mph+

@Rob - to be honest they are pretty decent on home tracks. A lot will depend on how many of their fast bowlers they can keep fit.
