@dezdezzy He's hardly stormed the palace though. Lately the bar for being a good selection is not getting dropped immediately after your first series...

Could well be, England played a four day game against Afgan and Alsop opened and yet Stoneman wasn't even in the party
by nickcricket9/5/2017 3:35:02 PM
I said as much...

@nickcricket - wasn't that because he had already signed up for the BPL & PSL? Fully agree that Malan was an unexpected inclusion in the Test side, as they'd only ever tried him in white-ball, but it doesn't seem to have worked too badly yet.
@KieranLayer Yes he has played in the white ball matches in England but wasn't in the UAE, Certainly didn't play the First Class matches in Sri Lanka but yet was 6 months for Test debut
by nickcricket9/5/2017 3:28:44 PM
yeah there are a few strange selections like Alsop, Helm etc... they seem to be one-off cases were one of the coaches has seen something they like in the nets and wants to find out a bit more though.
by dez dezzy9/5/2017 3:27:30 PM
Yeah I was under the impression that all except Hameed had been in the Lions side? Malan in particular scored shed loads there.
by Kieran Layer9/5/2017 3:26:16 PM
England have used the Lions to take a few punts, like Alsop who can't even get in the Hampshire team unless he Keeps
by nickcricket9/5/2017 3:25:49 PM
Malan was a fixture in the Lions last year... Stoneman played in the Lions v SA A games before debuting for England. Duckett & Jennings also both played for the Lions before their England debuts (Duckett last summer & Jennings in the UAE just before his debut in India). Or am i getting the wrong end of the stick?
by dez dezzy9/5/2017 3:25:32 PM
Stoneman, Malan this summer. Duckett, Hameed and Jennings also made England debuts before being invited to the UAE
by nickcricket9/5/2017 3:22:30 PM
Which players you thinking of nick?
by dez dezzy9/5/2017 3:21:03 PM
Hildreth getting caught for a breezy 33? I refuse to believe it

The thing about Northeast is he doesn't even make the Lions squads, personally I think the selection of those squads has been very poor. Look at last winter, look at the amount of players picked this summer who weren't there
by nickcricket9/5/2017 3:19:56 PM
Let's not forget Gillespie was working with Kent earlier in the season so he must rate his 'character' as well as his batting
by Chris Cayenne9/5/2017 3:19:14 PM
I think Denly's shambolic period at Middlesex has probably slammed the door on him forever.
by StaggerBreaths9/5/2017 3:17:38 PM
UPDATE: Match delayed by rain, Surrey 16/0 (5 ov, lost the toss) v Hampshire
by ESPNcricinfo Live9/5/2017 3:15:39 PM
At the risk of being hounded out the door, Joe Denly has had quite a season... (119 and 71 earlier against Sussex as well, for that matter)
by Kieran Layer9/5/2017 3:15:37 PM
Northeast that is... not Hildreth, definitely not...
by dez dezzy9/5/2017 3:15:29 PM
@StaggerBreaths Yeah I will be ducking full balls and refusing to get into line before Hildreth gets a game
by nickcricket9/5/2017 3:14:38 PM
Farbrace likes him... seriously think it's time for a change of selectors - there were rumours of differences of opinion between the management/captain & the selectors towards the end of the India Test tour
by dez dezzy9/5/2017 3:14:22 PM
I'm going to get a cricket bat for Christmas in preparation for my opening the batting in 2023
