After 10 Tests Vaughan himself averaged 27, by 20 he averaged 45
by nickcricket9/5/2017 3:50:22 PM
That stops the merry go round. I don't like Root at 3 any more than the next man, but given the options available...
by StaggerBreaths9/5/2017 3:49:48 PM
Vaughan says so many things, it stands to reason that some of them would be reasonable by the law of averages...
by NemoUKS edited by David Hopps9/5/2017 3:49:36 PM
@nickcricket - exactly. Which shows the selectors have completely lost the plot.
by dez dezzy9/5/2017 3:49:28 PM
Or Root 3, Malan 4, Gaz 5?
by StaggerBreaths9/5/2017 3:49:07 PM
I can't believe I am going to say this...yes I am. I agree with something Vaughan said last summer...This hurts...That we judge players too quickly if you look at his start in Test Cricket he wasn't expected to score hundreds from the first innings
by nickcricket9/5/2017 3:48:24 PM
what Will said....he's not a #3, but at #5 GazBall is v strong and i'd rather him there than Westley
by Joe Williams9/5/2017 3:48:09 PM
Decent pinch hitter as well if we need to bat for a declaration.
by NemoUKS9/5/2017 3:47:09 PM
Nick's got it. Replace Cook in the slips and that's 100 runs per Test saved at least.
by StaggerBreaths9/5/2017 3:46:16 PM
@NemoUKS Chris Jordan is gun at a 1st Slip and could bowl on very hot days to stop Jimmy going for 34 off an over
by nickcricket9/5/2017 3:45:45 PM
May as well take Billings to complete his world tour
by Chris Cayenne9/5/2017 3:45:43 PM
also worth remembering that Baz played the whole season for Yorkshire at 4 and 5 then was asked to come in at 3 to face Morkel and Philander bowling with the new cherry when England were:

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE not Borthwick
by dez dezzy9/5/2017 3:44:56 PM
My worry is that they will play him at three if Westley doesn't get a score at Lords
by nickcricket9/5/2017 3:44:52 PM
Maybe we should just accept our fate and play a couple of specialist fielders in the middle order. Who are the best outfielders around?
by NemoUKS9/5/2017 3:44:41 PM
And then Borthwick in by Test 5.
by StaggerBreaths9/5/2017 3:44:30 PM
by nickcricket9/5/2017 3:44:17 PM
So he'll be in the team by Test 3 then?
by StaggerBreaths9/5/2017 3:44:12 PM
Yep if Ballance is going to play it should be at 5, but that just carries on the merry-go-round which is becoming farcical now
by dez dezzy9/5/2017 3:44:11 PM
I expect they will take him, been on a Ashes tour before wouldn't expect him to play unless things good wrong.
by nickcricket9/5/2017 3:43:46 PM
Ballance didn't do badly, except by the standards he'd shown in county cricket. I'd still bring him to Oz in the event of something happening to our 3/4/5.
by StaggerBreaths9/5/2017 3:42:32 PM
Not sure if Ballance has been discarded, not technically dropped, I think he may still be in selectors plans @ #5 for Aus
by Joe Williams9/5/2017 3:42:29 PM
I could bat at eight and not bowl if that helps England out, would also need hiding in the field and would be sick on fitness testing days
by nickcricket9/5/2017 3:42:22 PM
With Sanga at 3 we could put me at 2 and 5 and it'd be a huuuuuge improvement over our current 2, 3 and 5!!!
by Joe Williams9/5/2017 3:41:22 PM
Malan is currently averaging less than Ballance did Vs Pakistan last summer...
by nickcricket9/5/2017 3:41:17 PM
Heino Kuhn #OlderThanUpulTharanga
by Will Colwell9/5/2017 3:41:01 PM
If you're going to get out to a Kent opening bowler, at least make it Stevens. Tchah.
by StaggerBreaths9/5/2017 3:40:57 PM
With Sanga at 3 you could just go without filling the other 2 slots
by dez dezzy9/5/2017 3:40:05 PM
how on earth is Upul Tharanga younger than, say, Wriddiman Saha?
by Will Colwell9/5/2017 3:39:10 PM
So Tharanga at 2, Sangakkara at 5 and Ehantharajah at 5?
by NemoUKS9/5/2017 3:38:55 PM
@dezdezzy I'd back Sam Northeast to battle it out there as well. Brings us full circle quite nicely!

If Malan and Stoneman can average 35 or thereabouts that's probably enough for now. It won't stop crushing defeats in Oz and India, but few things will.
by StaggerBreaths9/5/2017 3:37:45 PM
If we're putting Sri Lankans in there, I think there's a handy bloke who played a few games for Surrey...
by Kieran Layer9/5/2017 3:37:45 PM
@KieranLayer - yeah i know, but it made a change to have a middle order bat that was prepared to battle it out for a change (at Headingley in the 2nd innings), not something that's been associated with England for a while.
by dez dezzy9/5/2017 3:37:35 PM
Thing is, you could stick Upul Tharanga at 2, 3, and 5, and England would actually have quite a good team.
by StaggerBreaths9/5/2017 3:36:54 PM
Not having a glaring weakness against straight bowling is about the bar now...
by NemoUKS9/5/2017 3:36:00 PM
@dezdezzy He's hardly stormed the palace though. Lately the bar for being a good selection is not getting dropped immediately after your first series...
by Kieran Layer9/5/2017 3:35:22 PM
Could well be, England played a four day game against Afgan and Alsop opened and yet Stoneman wasn't even in the party
