The only question is whether he'll need to be, or whether England will take one look at Hazlewood/C*mmins/Starc and be throwing their wickets at Lyon like confetti by the third Test.

I don't think Cartwright is good enough with bat or ball.
by Humair Arshad8/30/2017 10:26:27 AM
I imagine Cartwright will do the Siddle-ish running in all day bit then. Is he good enough for that though?
Also agreed with Will, Wade is amusingly terrible behind the poles.

@SDHoneymonster Nathan Lyon having 250 test wickets is completely startling to me. I expect they'll go Warner, Renshaw, Khawaja, Smith, Handsome Pete, Cartwright, Wade, ***mins, Starc, Hazlewood, Lyon and then panic call up Shaun Marsh, Maxwell, Bird and Henriques in the unlikely event that England win a test.
Was reading an Aussie discussion of their wicketkeeping options at the moment and it did make me grateful that England have players the calibre of Foakes, Cox and Billings in the pipeline. Steve Davies would play every test if he was Australian.

@WillColwell I expect Cartwright, unless Maxwell scores a bucketload in the second Test in Bangladesh. Maxwell's bowling a likely non-factor in Australia. Although given that the Aussie selectors occasionally seem to get the urge to drop Lyon seemingly at random he could be the all rounder providing some spin if they went in with four frontline seamers if there's a greentop somewhere along the way.

Just to keep harking on; for example, had parentage been provided for in English cricket's qualification laws Pietersen could've played for England much earlier as his mum is English (Jennings too, although I get the feeling we're not so fussed about that one!) Other players that could well have played for England in this scenario: Ryan Harris, James Pattinson, Steven Smith - those thieving Aussies :P Harris was actually pretty close to throwing his lot in with England by all accounts.

@DaveKnibb I find the lack of some sort of provision for parental heritage in the ECB's cricket qualification rules a bit mad frankly, simply as it's so out of step with the rest of global sport. I'm not championing for the ECB to go out and bring loads of potential England-qualified players over from other countries ala the Irish in rugby but it doesn't make much sense to me to deny someone the right to represent the country of their parents.
