Dez - for me, we were perhaps too successful for our own good under Gillespie, and have lost a fair number of players to the England set up as a result, OK not all were homegrown, but we do provide a fair portion of options across all formats. What I don't understand is how our batting line up suddenly lost form en mass, lyth, lees and leaning were all talked as england options 2-3 years ago then boom, shambles the effing lot of them. On the bowling side, age has caught up with us on the seam side and being arsed on the spinning side, yes Rashid talking about you. We've actually tried a fair amount of young players this season, sadly only Coad looks a prospect at the moment

Yorkshire have got a few seamers in the 2nd XI who could come in most of them are all rounders, so people like Waite who has played this season. Fisher who is a very good talent if he can stay fit, they have loaned out Josh Shaw a couple of times. Its thinner in the batting side, where they let Tattersall go and brought him back. Lets not forget Coad either, who was expecting him to be in the higest wicket taker tally at the start of the season

Are academies generally in decline or why have counties like Warks & Yorks suddenly got an ageing squad & little new talent coming through?

in a way Nick i'm more worried about the bowling than batting as it has covered our batting deficiencies for a few years, with Sidebottom gone, with Bresnan and Brooks time I fear is now telling, Plunkett, Rashid and Wiley play so much white ball for England leaving us with not a great deal to be honest.

If Yorkshire don't go down this season, then there is a good chance it will be next. There isn't anywhere to hide when 25% of the comp go down. They don't have a lot of players in the peak years and the bowling attack which had masked inconsisent batting since 2014 will be another year older.
by nickcricket9/13/2017 12:54:39 PM
we deserve to go down this year, and perhaps need it to sort some of the horrible issues out that we have, I suspect Surrey will bowl us out twice and win comfortably making discussions about a declaration just now moot in the long term
by Joe Williams9/13/2017 12:50:31 PM
Yorkshire aren't getting closer to a draw - you can't block out 2 1/2 days, 10 overs isn't going to change that
by Freddie Lynch9/13/2017 12:49:21 PM
@nickcricket To be honest, I think the plan now is to bowl them out twice in a row. 2 spinners, 3 seamers, large follow on target

Maybe but at this point, Surrey are just batting Yorkshire nearer the draw. How many 4 day matches have been won by a team who have conceded 500? It can't be many. Maybe Batty is so happy with is bowling options he will enforce the follow on but if they had declared when they had 530 they would have had time to bat again for 3 hours and give the bowlers a bit of rest
It's going to take quite an effort to get 20 wickets on this pitch, just need as much scoreboard pressure and as much grinding down as possible
by Freddie Lynch9/13/2017 12:44:30 PM
up to 2 1/2 days left to bowl us out twice, not beyond the realms of possibility i'd say
by Joe Williams9/13/2017 12:44:16 PM
They must be really getting under the noses of the Yorkies by doing this... But other than that i can't see the point of batting time...Oh ok, here goes Clarke then!
by dez dezzy9/13/2017 12:43:50 PM
Is George Dobell on the roof of the Oval claiming he will jump if he doesn't get to watch Rikki Clarke bat?
by nickcricket9/13/2017 12:43:32 PM
@nickcricket Meaker has been in decent form with the bat this season. It's an absolute road here at the Oval - more overs out there= more tiredness for Yorks. Maybe slightly better chance of running through Yorks this afternoon by keeping them out there
