Essex 271-5 lead Warwickshire by 70 runs
Varun Chopra and Dan Lawrence piled the pressure on Warwickshire as champions-elect Essex went into tea on 271 for five, replying to the home side's 201, on the second day of their Specsavers County Championship tussle at Edgbaston.
Chopra scored 98 (181 balls, 15 fours) and Lawrence 78 (130, 14) as Essex steadily tightened their stranglehold on the game.
Resuming after lunch on 146 for two, Chopra and Lawrence took their stand to 92 in 29 overs before the latter was narrowly denied a century against his old team when he fell lbw to medium-pacer Matt Lamb.
Ryan Sidebottom then ended Lawrence's attractive innings via a catch at gully and quickly added the wicket off Ryan ten Doeschate who played on for a third-ball duck.
