Hampshire 254 lead Essex 76 & 118-3 by 60 runs
Dan Lawrence, Nick Browne and Tom Westley led Essex’s fight back as they attempted to save their side from an innings defeat to Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl.
Essex were made to follow on having been bowled out for 76 in the first innings, before losing an early wicket in the second.
But Browne and Westley put on 43 for the second wicket in a watchful manner to finally give the champions some success.
Liam Dawson proved Essex’s downfall though as the left arm spinner, who spent time on loan at Essex three seasons ago, accounted for the pair.
Browne was lbw before Westley, who had scored an impressive 36, offered a sharp caught and bowled to Dawson.
Lawrence quietly went under the radar to reach an unbeaten 37 at tea – with the away side still trailing by 60 runs.
