James S**taker: “The selectors are backing James Vince to make an impact on his recall to the Test squad. He is a quality strokeplayer and we believe his game will suit the Australian pitches. His understanding of the England set-up will help him settle into the environment quickly and hit the ground running when we arrive in Perth next month.”

I saw Jess, I've 'enabled' your account. :)
by StaggerBreaths9/27/2017 9:23:23 AM
@Joe Did Vaughan also mention that he is Vince's agent?

Just signed up to the boards this morning! I think it will be a long winter :)
by Jessica Lewis9/27/2017 9:23:00 AM
Interesting stuff. The full article has one PD Trego averaging significantly more than James Vince, so I have no intention of questioning their methodology...

Quick reminder that while the liveblog's down over the winter, you can bemoan England's Ashes performance here: countycricketlive.boards.net

I'm sure I remember Vaughan mentioning on TMS that Westley is an uninspiring choice because his first class average is 36 and the test team should be picking people who average in the 40s. Vince does average 39, but only 33 this season and his test average is below 20

George Dobell sets the scene at Taunton.

Morning! RE someone's comment about Collingwood averaging higher than Vince... a couple of years ago on the Women's Ashes tour, there were so many injuries that Beth Wild, physio was genuinely considered for a call up. Do you think Colly fancies his chances?!
by Jessica Lewis9/27/2017 9:21:18 AM
@Haystack_Jnr Unless they are Mason Crane or Craig Overton?
by nickcricket9/27/2017 9:20:56 AM
You can say the same about Stuart Broad, Nick (to slip).
by StaggerBreaths9/27/2017 9:20:52 AM
I'm guessing that they think that the pressure and intensity of an Ashes tour would be too much for debutants.
by Haystack_Jnr9/27/2017 9:20:23 AM
One thing I will say about Vince is that he is good to watch so it won't be boring while he is in
by nickcricket9/27/2017 9:19:57 AM
'Mourning all', I think you mean.

@Nick - That's harsh, if his in good nick he can usually pick out gully

UPDATE: Match start delayed (Inspection at 10:30am), Kent 98/6 (34.5 ov, lead by 171 - 2nd inns) v Glamorgan

I assume 'put them away' refers to his bat and cricket gear in the locker room.
by StaggerBreaths9/27/2017 9:17:55 AM
Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove told latest @TheCricketerMag he felt it was too soon for Mason Crane. Asked England to wait a year or two.
When he says put them away, I presume he means nick them to second slip?
by nickcricket9/27/2017 9:16:45 AM
Also you're all going to love this reason for putting Vince forward from MV - 'I think somebody who has not been mentioned and could bat at three is Vince. If somebody bowls a half-volley, he'll put it away.' Now if that's an argument for someone making the Ashes squad then please help us - like Australia are practising their half volleys!
Heard a commentator make a good point not too long ago, there are about 10 batsmen with a chance of being in the team at 3, and whoever they picked it would be a bit underwhelming because there just isn't a stand out. Although at that point I'm not sure Vince was 1 of the 10...
by Joe Tompkins9/27/2017 9:11:23 AM
Also SNE, natch, especially over Vince (and sadly Ballance).
by StaggerBreaths9/27/2017 9:11:00 AM
Paul Collingwood, who is coaching at the Ashes, has a much higher average than James Vince this season.
Joe: Leach springs to mind, raps several times on the door of the skull, and yells through the eyeholes.
by StaggerBreaths9/27/2017 9:10:45 AM
No for my own sanity I am keeping off the BBC and not reading much tweeted by BBC/Cricnfo/England ect on Twitter because the level of vitriol is getting excessive. We knew England had 8 names of the sheet and the the batting picks were going to contention because no one who has had the opportunity has nailed a place
by nickcricket9/27/2017 9:10:33 AM
Foakes is more deserving of a starting XI place than Vince, even if he's not the keeper

'Go well in Oz, @benstokes38!' He needs to get out of jail first...
by StaggerBreaths9/27/2017 9:09:28 AM
Vince is the worst pick. Apart from staying fit he has done absolutely nothing to warrant a recall. I suppose Strauss did say the squad would be picked on form & fitness... But why only the fitness side of it in some cases?
by dez dezzy9/27/2017 9:07:51 AM
meh to Ashes squad announcement, as expected it is weak but is there genuinely anyone left out who truly deserved a call up?
by Joe Williams9/27/2017 9:06:25 AM
Who else is following the BBC Ashes announcement page? Andrew Dennett says 'Not impressed if that's the Ashes squad...Who is Ben Foakes?'... Grrrr, how dare he. Just shows the ignorance in relation to county cricket of the BBC audience though.
by dez dezzy9/27/2017 9:04:47 AM
So the leak was right it seems, I think they leaked it on purpose so the story got headlines twice. Stokes stays as VC because VC is an important role...
