Hello. It’s a glorious morning at Lord’s. Chilly but sunny and the trees in bloom. The locals tell me the weather will cloud over shortly and the ball will nip around. We’ll see.
Sadly the builders are back today. So instead of the gentle hum of the crowd, we instead have the relentless noise of grinding and welding and engines. It sounds, to me at least, much like Radio One.
You can never be sure against a side with Ian Bell et al but Middlesex’s first innings total may already prove match defining. With no heavy roller in use in this game – Middlesex’s insurance against being made to bat first – any indentations made on a soft first day surface are likely to remain for the rest of the day.
At the risk of being seen to start a gratuitous argument (really, this feel like entering a pub, approaching two stranger and saying to one ‘He just called your mum an ugly cow’)… I do wonder what the reaction to the helmet debate would have been if it was KP, not Cook, who had insisted on using his old helmet. Different, I suspect.
By the way, in the two minutes it’s taken to write this, a huge dark cloud has rolled into view. Those locals…
