Tim Wigmore at Warwickshire 401-7 v Surrey
A slightly gloomy day at Guildford, and there has been no happy homecoming for Rikki Clarke, who grew up playing his cricket at this ground: he flashed Stuart Meaker behind for 17. Still, that has not encumbered Warwickshire’s progress: an attractive half-century from Keith Barker has lifted their score above 400. Surrey will have to bat very well to salvage a draw, and prevent a third consecutive Championship defeat here.
Incidentally, I’m pleased to see Somerset signing Paul van Meekeren, who has admirable figures against Pakistan. At least until Brexit, the associate world offers counties a relatively untapped source of talent. I reckon Andy McBrine, who bowled his 10 overs of offspin for just 26 against the West Indies in the World Cup on the most benign batting surface, and scored a pugnacious 79 against Sri Lanka last month, is probably the best player around who hasn’t been signed: he’d be a fine signing for a county in white ball cricket.
