Think Buttler's best chance to get back in the England side is if Bairstow becomes a specialist batsman.

@Mark another question is would Lancs want him to keep? Alex Davies is a proper specialist keeper

I remember when the sky commentators use to say Jos needed to give up the gloves to have a chance with England. Then Giles comes out with the fact he had to be playing all forms and that what sparked his leave from Somerset. He's been given the run around really.
Obviously Buttler hasn't played any first class cricket this year so its not a fair comparison but Bairstow has as many FC hundreds his year (2 for Yorkshire, 2 For England) as Buttler has in his entire career but those guys who are calling for Buttler are not saying drop Bairstow as a batsmen so it comes down to Keeping. I think Jonny has made some good improvements to his Keeping but he will have to show them on a day when every other ball isn't going past the bat and he like Buttler isn't as good at keeping to spin

All a bit moot as long as YJB is in God mode.

Jos has always kept when he's been in the Lancashire side and Davies has played as a specialist batsman. But Livingston might keep Davies out of the side at least in the Championship matches.

I wonder how much longer is on Buttlers Lancs contract, It wouldn't surprise me if he wanted to return to Somerset. He described himself as a Homeboy in a recent interview and if he retains his Central Contract which I think he will because of how valuable he is from a T20 point of view then Somerset/Lancs won't pay him anyway so his salary there is moot

Somerset will have him back if they don't want him! He has been given the run around by both Somerset (Thanks Dave) and England

I think New Zealand play tests with 3 wicketkeepers & South Africa with a couple, no real problem having two stumpers in the team & as Bairstow & Buttler could both play the pseudo-Gilchrist role I think there is space for both especially when Stokes is available
by Antony_Melvin5/23/2016 11:10:08 AM
Buttler will play so little for Lancs they could probably just rest Davies as it will be in that time of year when sides are playing 4 days a week and traveling the rest
by nickcricket5/23/2016 11:10:31 AM
I suppose the question is are England stronger with Buttler at 7 and Bairstow at 5 or With a specialist bat at the moment its Vince at 5 and Bairstow at 7?

@Nick Bairstow/Buttler or Vince/Bairstow is a good way to look at it, but also how much will keeping be taking out of YJB (who is older than other YJB) - also known as the 'How many runs did England lose because Alec Stewart kept wicket' conundrum?
