Alan Gardner at Essex v Glamorgan
So, you've probably heard... Glamorgan's kit is somewhere on the A12, which was closed northbound for a while this morning due to an accident. I had to go through Harlow and Ongar myself, getting here just before the scheduled toss (were there to be one), only to find a general milling around, the tannoy announcement met with wry chuckles and shakes of the head as early bird patrons discovered that the start had been put back by an hour to 11.30am. Assuming Glamorgan's stash turns up soon, that is.
The problems suffered by the kit bus mean that the Essex promotion bus has been held up, too. Fortress Chelmsford is ready to rattle the sabres and seaxes in celebration of a return to Division One for the first time in seven years - they need six points to be certain, although that assumes Sussex get a maximum 48 from their final two fixtures. Either way, Kent are dwindling in the rearview mirror - a tasty final fixture at Canterbury between the leading two no longer looking so vital - and Chris Silverwood is set to achieve the club's stated goal of getting into the Championship's top tier at the first time of asking.
Essex are the winningest team in the division, while Glamorgan are the losingest, their broken-down transportation a metaphor for a season that has been left on the hard shoulder in recent weeks. The ECG - one of cricket's great Gs, of course, and basking in September sunshine - is all set for a coronation.
