To be fair there's Bowling Ali for the Complainers as well.

A really left-field selection would be Rashid. Sure, not for CLS mayhaps, but if Stokes' condition continues Darn Sarth, could give Rashid a trot out in preparation for the Winter.

For all the talk of Jimmy's perfprmance, Ali had the best bowling average in the last test
by Richard Lake5/22/2016 10:40:23 AM
Plunkett is another option, played Test Cricket before and bats well enough to bat at 8 and score more than Moeen has been. He would be a reliable performer but isn't a investment for the future.
by nickcricket5/22/2016 10:40:33 AM
Actually, I say "not for CLS": the man plies his trade at Headingley, he's not unused to bowling at primarily seaming grounds.
by StaggerBreaths5/22/2016 10:40:47 AM
Keith Barker is Div 1's leading wicket taker, and a left-armer, can bat, and his long-term performance is good (FC average is <26). I'm amazed he hasn't been picked already.

Murtagh, Batty and Masters are all around the 600 mark and can't imagine any of them going on long enough to get another 400 wickets.

Wouldn't have been the worst idea to have let Compton to play this round of fixtures. The only one in the top 6 who hasn't had a single noteworthy score this season so far.
by varun anand5/22/2016 10:42:47 AM
The other option is to add an extra batsmen and make do without Stokes, maybe Moeen might have to bowl a couple more overs. Not really sure who, Ballance could bat at 6 or England could have a look at Scott Borthwick
by nickcricket5/22/2016 10:43:13 AM
Medium-pace as all hell Rafi. Could be picked on a horses-for-courses basis Oop North, however I feel they'll not want to chop and change in such a manner.
@nickcricket Or indeed to play Stokes as a batsman if he's fit enough, can't see the pitch being much different to Headingley's and it's not as if England needed the five bowlers!
by SDHoneymonster5/22/2016 10:44:31 AM
@nickcricket Not Ballance at the moment, he's in awful form. Truth is that England won without a meaningful contribution from almost half of the team (Cook, Compton, Root, Vince, Ali and half of Stokes). Perhaps they could raffle off a place in the team for charity?
by Richard Lake5/22/2016 10:48:02 AM
The other thing, it's good to see England playing Bairstow or bust at Headingley, just like Yorkshire have for the past season. He must have felt at home with the top order wickets tumbling as they did
by Richard Lake5/22/2016 10:49:18 AM
If Stokes can bat without making his injury worse then I think its a good option but as a three format player I think if there is a chance he will make it worse he should sit out.

Mdx v Som comms talking about Chris Gayle's latest indiscretions...

Richard Lake - He is in better form than Compton, but hey Karl Brown is in better form that Compton
by nickcricket5/22/2016 10:51:58 AM
@nickcricket Is that the first rumbling of a Karl Brown For England bandwagon?
