I think it's indubitable that they look for something else over and above county averages, feeling that county performance alone isn't a sufficient barometer, even in Div. 1. Ballance scored a ton when the spotlights were hovering, and along with Vince and Compo had played for England before. Call it temperament, or snobbery, or not having time to look at all the grounds, or whatever you will.

Well it seems they only have time to watch ODI cricket so we are going to have at Test side with 4 Bairstow with a licence to attack, 5 Roy with a licence to attack, 6 Stokes with a licence to attack, 7 Buttler with a licence to attack 8 Moeen Ali with a licence to attack and at 9 Chris Woakes playing like a Test Match batsmen

It would seem to me that in terms of world or potential world class batsmen .. Cook , Roy , Root , Bairstow stand out .. Then we have the all rounders .. Not to mention Butler.. Roy looks good enough to be given a chance as the next in line for test cricket.

Roy is a class act in LO. So is/was Hales. I will continue to tread lightly.

Averages should be a guide for selection, but you can't always go on averages, Vaughan and Trescothick were two with distinctly average averages (mid 30s I think) for both of them when they were first pick.

Begining to Vaughan and Trescothick are the Nazi of selection debate
by nickcricket8/25/2016 10:06:38 AM
Trouble is those two now seem to be being used as justification for e.g. Vince. Use with caution.

I choose to believe that Gloucs. CCC are encouraging their supporters to burn their results certificates.
by StaggerBreaths8/25/2016 10:07:47 AM
My bugbear is that a talented player in D2 basically has no chance of getting picked. Surely the selectors should be able to judge whether a player has the potential to play test cricket regardless of averages or the county they are playing for etc (within reason of course).
by Haystack_Jnr8/25/2016 10:09:21 AM
Remember when England picked Trott in 2009, they would probably call up Lumb now

If Dazzer and Billings get going, Gloucs could be in for a bit of ball chasing this morning
by Haystack_Jnr8/25/2016 10:10:30 AM
That should be what the Lions are for Stacky. Unfortunately, as we've repeated ad nauseam, they don't do FC Lions any more.
by StaggerBreaths8/25/2016 10:10:55 AM
Also I reckon that there should be some point when you look at a player's average and say, 'Okay, that's quite good even for Div. 2.' Last I checked DBD (an opener) averaged in excess of 75 this season, and Northeast 87 or thereabouts. Nick Browne of Essex, similar. Those are just plain good.

Dull at Scarborough but that's two classes up on the weather earlier, which nevertheless had its own fascination. Still a decent crowd here and they were queuing at nine o'clock when it was not certain there'd be any play at all. This is a remarkable town during the Festival and jolly nice at other times, too
