Tim Wigmore at Surrey 427-7 v Lancashire
There is much excitement about Sam Curran’s bowling, and for good reason: he is a left-armer who can swing the ball both ways from 85ph, and can generate reverse swing too. Not bad for one who only turned 18 a few weeks ago. Yet his batting is almost as impressive; indeed, sage judges reckon he might become a batting allrounder. No one at The Oval this morning would deny either his batting potential or the quality it already possesses. Three consecutive fours off Kyle Jarvis showed Curran’s range. There was an impudent upper-cut over the slips to reach his half-century; a perfectly timed leg glance; and then a drive thrashed imperiously through the covers. And now there’s a shot to rank with any of those: a flat-batted pull from Arron Lilley which has taken Curran to 75, and his highest first-class score yet. Surrey’s lead is already approaching 150, though they have been aided by some distinctly ragtag Lancashire bowling this morning.
