Not confident of how Stokes will go, batting wise in India. Can imagine Ashwin having some fun....

Nick, this is a big one. It's five Tests in conditions that England have historically (2012 aside) not been great in. So I'd treat it as a goal in its own right, aim for that, tailor the squad towards that... and concentrate on South Africa after the 3-1 defeat has been and gone.

And 3-1 is optimistic, I can see an Ashwin-enabled India high on confidence preparing spinning tracks (see South Africa) and going for a whitewash.

Like in 2012....

Think India would be foolish to produce those SA pitches again, they don't need to a slow turner will do England. The SA pitches would give England a puncher chance

England had Monty and Swann and a more-or-less settled batting line-up (I think? I didn't start following cricket in earnest until 2013) in 2012. If this England line-up emulate it then great, but let's not get our hopes up.
Warwickshire and Ireland fast bowler Boyd Rankin will miss the remainder of the county season after suffering a fracture of his left tibia

Stokes has struggled on pitches without pace and is far better against pace but England will pick him and I guess at his age he is worth investing in.

I can see them promoting him to five after what Bayliss has said.

But actually I think they'll keep Ballance and Hales. Cook/Hales/Root/Ballance/YJB/Stokes/Moe/Woakes/Rashid/Broaderson.

Then again, the think-tank have surprised us before...

Yes it was a fairly settled team, Compton was trying to replace Strauss and it wasn't a merry-go-round yet. The Number 6 was changing while a lot post Colly. England had tried Bopara, Bairstow, Taylor and finally on that tour Root. Bairstow only played one innings in the series and was out caught off the helmet (i.e Wasn't out) but had to leave for personal reasons

Bairstow is in the ODI squad
