David Hopps at Durham 38-2 v Warwickshire
This is the match between the two sides who are a little too close to the relegation positions for comfort. The winner will probably relax, the loser will feel the chill come Friday. Warwickshire are a point and a place higher but Durham have a game in hand.
It felt like a bowling day, a little cloudy although not quite as warm and humid as further south, and Durham have lost two wickets in the first 20 overs, both to Keith Barker.
There is no Mark Wood in the Durham line-up - he is with the England ODI squad - and it is ecxpected that he will leave the county for financial reasons unless he gets a central contract. If he gets a central contract it will mean he plays most of the summer for England. For Durham, neither outcome is hugely beneficial, apart from the fact that maintaining the loyalty of your best players is a good thing.
It was a tough drive up the A1 with its 15 miles of narrow 50mph roadworks around Catterick. No time to chat on the phone, drink a Costa or gaze out of the window at the Dales in the distance. The only choice was to adopt the Haseeb Hameed position, concentrate like hell and peer straight down the line. How he does that all day is beyond me. I'm fair exhausted.
Two down at lunch would be a good result for Durham.
