Tim Wigmore at Surrey 54-0 v Nottinghamshire
For much of the afternoon there has been more life in the rooms at The Oval that are staging trials for The Voice than on the ground. With the look of a side who have collapsed too often this season, Surrey have played with a meticulous care that belies their position of dominance: despite a first innings lead of 141, Surrey had only reached 41 after 20 overs. But, crucially, they have yet to lose a wicket, and a couple of pristine boundaries from Rory Burns - a crisp drive through the offside and a sumptuous flick - off Samit Patel’s last over have taken the lead to near 200. Surrey will envisage taking that to about 370 tonight and then declaring with a day left in the game.

Paul Edwards at Lancashire 308 v Warwickshire 40-0
At 91 for four Lancashire would probably have settled for a total of 308; but having been 196 for four overnight they were rather disappointed with it. It needed a perky last-wicket stand of 19 between the debutant, Matthew Parkinson, and Liam Livingstone to ensure the home side collected their third bonus point before Parkinson was bowled for nine, leaving Livingstone unbeaten on a game 34. Indeed, Livingstone has now been stranded on 108, 60 and 60 and 34 in first-class games this season and his average is over 76. He rarely looked like getting out, even when facing Patel or Barker. Chopra and Umeed have begun well, although it's still remarkable that so many bowlers are content to operate without a third man.
