The rain is, reportedly, creeping towards the ground and you sense Hampshire will take much solace from those words.
That the weather is occupying the thoughts of much of the assembled media says a lot about the action on the field. Hampshire are battling hard and Somerset are probing admirably, but on a slow pitch so rarely do the batsmen appear troubled that pressure is difficult to build. It is telling that all of the wickets to fall can be put down to faults by the batsmen. As I type Sean Ervine nearly becomes another such case as he guides Jim Allenby through a gap between first and third slip. Quite why, only he will know. Maybe he just prefers living life on the edge...
