There's definitely room for abuse of his position, and I'm sure a subconscious desire to plug ISM's players if nothing else. I've just not heard anything much thus far. But he's definitely not "independent".
by StaggerBreaths5/31/2016 11:06:24 AM
As for England selection, an inability to shave seems important too - I blame Moeen. And no I am not Ted Dexter and you can't have your £5.
by David Taylor5/31/2016 11:07:19 AM
Boycott spent most of the last few years promoting Lyth/Lees whilst being on the board of Yorkshire too of course, albeit that was a bit more transparent
by NemoUKS5/31/2016 11:07:25 AM
There's also a lot of crossover between Yorkshire players and those on ISM's books. Difficult for Vaughan to be totally impartial having been associated with the county forever. Same very much true for Boycott as per the below.
by Matt Richardson5/31/2016 11:08:14 AM
Borthwick has been in top 10 run scorers for Div 1 for past 4 seasons including 2nd last year. He's beaten Compton in every one of those seasons. I think one of the reasons people don't rate him is that his FC average took a massive hit from playing as a number 8 for about three years. Since he's moved up to 3 he's averaged about 45 and is only getting better
by Nick Friend5/31/2016 11:08:15 AM
True, though I'm pretty sure Boycott wasn't materially benefiting from that.
by Beardy_Ed5/31/2016 11:08:17 AM
Alec Stewart must have been the worst though. Nothing short of a sales pitch every time he picked up a mic
by Dave Brown5/31/2016 11:08:37 AM
Perhaps Hildreth has been poorly served by Vic Marks' relative lack of bombast...
by NemoUKS5/31/2016 11:09:29 AM
I remember Vaughan endlessly plugging Willet (another one with ISM) to win the Masters - I brushed it off as the usual cronyism but I guess even a stopped clock is right sometimes!
by James Errington5/31/2016 11:09:47 AM
I think there's a difference between a financial incentive to push certain players which the general public isn't informed about, and a well-known, natural bias in favour of 'your' county.
by Beardy_Ed5/31/2016 11:10:47 AM
I know I know I'm joking, but I did find it funny that it actually came off
by James Errington5/31/2016 11:11:53 AM
I notice Buttler is also on ISM's books. Must be why you hear Vaughan / Bumble (another ISM) still banging on about him getting in the test team.
by Matt Richardson5/31/2016 11:14:18 AM
Poor Lewis Gregory must be on a lower payment band ;)
by NemoUKS5/31/2016 11:14:55 AM
What is Vaughan's actual stake in ISM? Does he have a controlling influence or is he merely a client?
by Matt Richardson5/31/2016 11:17:23 AM
How many is too many for Lancs?
by Nick Friend5/31/2016 11:19:55 AM
Is it not a case of commentators promoting players they watch more regularly? Former Yorks players more likely to watch Yorkshire and therefore more likely to plug them? Reality is not that many people will be able to get round and regularly watch all the counties play.
by Ben Ingham5/31/2016 11:20:10 AM
Apart from Nasser & Bumble, do any of the Sky Test Commentators watch any County Cricket ?
by County Championshipvia twitter5/31/2016 11:21:55 AM
True Ben, but Vaughan has been pushing Vince, Buttler and now Borthwick, all non-Yorkies but all under the same management
by James Errington5/31/2016 11:21:59 AM
@NickFriend Yorks will want to set a target of at least 300. Any team needing to score the highest innings score in a match should be in trouble by all accounts. I'd have hoped that anything around 250 will be a tough ask though
Somehow forgot Athers, he is one of my fave...... bit annoyed Nasser has been demoted to T20 blast duties. I'd rather him than Beefy, Gower or even Holding.
by stevew1255/31/2016 11:27:03 AM
Yorkshire just have their priorities right Afca.
by StaggerBreaths5/31/2016 11:27:03 AM
To be fair I get the impression the Sky commentators, with the obvious exception of Botham and probably Gower, do take in fair bit of county action.
by Matt Richardson5/31/2016 11:27:13 AM
There's plenty of time left in the game so Yorkshire might as well just rack up as many as they can. Should be able to get to 300 from here and I think that would be too much. Wouldn't be confident with anything less
by Nick Friend5/31/2016 11:27:23 AM
kolpak, Klinger is the nominated overseas in that XI
by NemoUKS5/31/2016 11:27:26 AM
Before we stick the knife in on the Sky lot I don't think many of the TMS lot get to many county games barring the Yorkies and Marks. It would be staggering if Aggers has seen a county game in the last 5 years, he seems clueless about the game.
by storrse5/31/2016 11:27:36 AM
...and Brendan Taylor's found some form. It was down the back of his sofa the entire time.
UPDATE: Match start delayed (No play before Lunch, rain), Kent 117/2 (44 ov, trail by 224 - 1st inns) v Leics
by ESPNcricinfo Live5/31/2016 11:28:09 AM
I JUST SAID THAT
by StaggerBreaths5/31/2016 11:28:29 AM
Yeah I think Aggers is the most guilty of paying absolutely no attention to the county game. Was painful the other day listening to him go through the county update on TMS. Too busy having dinner dates with Broady.
by Matt Richardson5/31/2016 11:29:14 AM
Either he's found form or he just no longer has to face the sort of quality attack you get at Cambridge MCCU.
It's probably the former isn't it.
by Sam Inglis5/31/2016 11:29:44 AM
Those county tweets with the portraits of said player when they get a milestone annoy me !
by stevew1255/31/2016 11:29:57 AM
Too busy flying - he has a pilot's licence, don't you know
