Alan Gardner at Essex 42-3 v Glamorgan 286
Craig Meschede is doing his best to ruffle Essex feathers, picking up three wickets with the new ball to leave the hosts 34-3 (although that is still better than the 34-5 from which Glamorgan began their recovery yesterday). Ravi Bopara then strode out and creamed his second ball through mid-off, as if to settle the nerves. "Come on, Ravi," was the cry from the Tom Pearce Stand as the members sweltered and squinted on this September scorcher, knowing that Essex need to get to 300 (although 250 might do it, with Sussex now eight down) to seal the long-anticipated deal on Division One cricket.
Varun Chopra's return, his first f/c innings at Chelmsford since 2009, did not go too well as Meschede pinned him in front half-forward and Essex lost Tom Westley soon after as well, nibbling down the leg side after one wristy flick for four. Nick Browne's tallywhacker was worth a few but he was then done by Meschede straightening one from round the wicket, still 20 short of becoming the third Essex batsman to 1000 Championship runs this year.
Another Bopara drive races towards the Hayes Close fences and the ECG denizens sit rapt (or possibly slumbering) in the afternoon glare...
