Jon Culley at Nottinghamshire 135 all out v Somerset 8-0
For a while, just a little while, the Notts crowd had visions of Samit Patel repeating his extraordinary innings against Warwickshire earlier in the season, where he responded to another staring-down-the-barrel situation by scoring 124 off 82 balls. It didn't save Notts from defeat then but something similar this time surely would. Alas it has not come to pass.
Imran Tahir's focus on blocking up one end wavered after lunch. Having almost run Patel out getting off the mark, he greeted the reintroduction off Jack Leach's left-arm spin with an enormous six over long-on but then perished four balls later to one that skidded through low. With Brett Hutton unable to bat because of a hand injury, out stepped Harry Gurney as Patel's next accomplice. He had time only to keep out one ball, however, before Patel managed to compound Nottinghamshire's misery by flicking a ball from Lewis Gregory directly into the hands of James Hildreth on the square leg boundary. Somerset need just 100 to win and something extraordinary from Tahir on this baked surface is probably Notts' only hope with the bottom two beckoning.
