I think Ball's selection was fair enough really, he was pretty widely acknowledged as being the next cab off the rank, given that the selectors don't seem to be interested in Chris Rushworth.

They have basically decided Rushworth's lack of pace will make him ineffective on Test wickets, Jake Ball has added 5 mph hence his call up. What Mike Selvey seems to want is someone to blame if things don't go well and I certainly don't want to go down the football route of sacking a manger/selector/supremo after 6 months.

Any selection is a long term investment, Say Jonny Bairstow last summer he wasn't doing too well until SA. In fact if he hadn't been able to take the gloves it could have been him making way for Taylor not Buttler

Is the cheap option what England need though, Nick? The ECB is loaded, so the best is what we should be striving for. Not a biased selection process which just gives more power back to a select few elite Counties. I agree we should not go to a football model - any model based on English football is going to be doomed! But, the system is strange and lacks any real explanation

Will Smith is 15* (107) for any Cowan fans out there
dave - Well it certainly looks like the ECB could afford it, not sure if would sold the basic issue of transparency and its difficult for any selector to be completely honest with the public about a player because that player is also reading it. Bayliss is almost causing more issues with shooting is mouth off like with the two out of three attacking player in the top three stuff in SA

no boundary only innings for Tresco, has to settle for a 3
