George Dobell at Nottinghamshire v Middlesex
Nottinghamshire have announced that Peter Moores is to be their new head coach. Moores, who is already with the club in a consultancy role, will effectively replace Mick Newell who, in football terms, is “going upstairs” to take on the director of cricket role. At first glance this might seem odd: Moores has, after all, been largely responsible for the coaching of the batsman at Notts all season and it has been that batting that has let them down. But he is hugely respected by nearly all the players he has worked with over many years (yes, there is one notable exception) and he has previously led Sussex and Lancashire to the Championship title. His critics would also point out that he has also been involved in two relegation campaigns: one here (yes, I am presuming they are going down) and the other at Lancashire. You can be sure, though, that had Notts not signed him, several other clubs – perhaps including Yorkshire – would have been keen. As ever, his record divides opinions.
