David Hopps at Yorkshire 444-9 v Durham
Yorkshire will be a little peeved about missing out on maximum batting points. Their opening position of 341 for 5 from 96 overs left then 59 short with 14 overs left, but a realisable target proved beyond them. All the more frustrating now that the ninth-wicket pair of Azeem Rafiq and Jack Brooks are making merry.
Chris Rushworth and Graham Onions are a demanding pair on a sultry morning, and with some hardness left in the ball, as Tim Bresnan found when his stumps were rearranged. They needed eight of 11 balls, but Hodd played four dot balls in succession before falling to McCarthy. With eight needed from the last over, Onions bowled a meaningful maiden to the new batsman, Steve Patterson.
Since then, as I say, many frolics. Hindsight says Yorkshire should have sent the Headband Warrior in for a slog at No 9.
As for whether Yorkshire should be chasing victory or maximum batting points, being four points behind Middlesex, the various permutations of that could be debated for hours.
Rafiq had just been stumped off the leg spin of Scott Borthwick for 45, on the charge and missing by miles. A good knock though.
